I've kept intending to drop in, but got involved in a number of things that seemed to take twice as much time as I expected, and suddenly I'd find it was bedtime! One very addicting thing is a website with cameras showing bald eagle nests on our Channel Islands in Southern California. Eagles were wiped out there from DDT, and a program to reintroduce them was started some years ago. First they would bring eagles from other areas, and if their eggs were weak-shelled and broke, eggs from birds in captivity, as in zoos, would be put in the nests. If the eggs were stronger, they'd be taken to be incubated, with fake eggs substituted, and the chicks would be returned to the nests. The last few years the eagles have been able to have naturally hatched chicks on a fairly good number of nests. There's a chat room with dozens of posters who are glued to their computer screens for hours each day, watching for egg-laying and now for hatching. We have a nearby raptor center where injured birds are treated, and those unable to be released are trained for educational purposes. All in all, a wonderful program. (Sorry it's not of British origin, but perhaps the same general type of thing is done there??) Anyway, I'm doing quite well these days, and I really won't stay away so long in future. Oh, by the way, in the nearby shopping center, there's the Victorian Pub, which does have an atmosphere much like those we used to go to in Scotland years ago, the neighborhood gathering place where many people know many other people.
